Hundreds of people lost their lives in the anti-reservation movement and made the headline “THE BURNING BANGLADESH”. In that situation, the Supreme Court of Bangladesh gave an important order regarding reservation in government jobs. Although the reservation was not completely removed, the court ordered the amendment.

THE BURNING BANGLADESH THE QUOTA SYSTEM:

It has been said that children of families who participated in the 1971 Liberation War will get a 5 per cent reservation in government jobs. Others will get 2 per cent savings. The Supreme Court of Bangladesh has made it clear that 93 per cent of government jobs will be based on merit. (Bangladesh Supreme Court)

The Supreme Court declared illegal the High Court’s verdict last month in favour of returning 30 per cent reservation. However, the Supreme Court of Bangladesh has not completely lifted the reservation. But the High Court termed the earlier order as illegal.

Besides, the court ordered the protesting students to return to the classroom again. The Supreme Court was scheduled to hear the reservation on August 7. But considering the situation, the hearing was brought forward. However, according to a section of experts, since reservation has not been fully lifted, there will be anger towards the government in the days to come.

Even if Sheikh Hasina’s government obeys the order of the court, many people are sceptical. Despite the court’s verdict, the situation in Bangladesh is still stagnant. A total of 133 deaths have been reported so far and given the fuel for the burning Bangladesh. However, official figures have not come forward. The country’s internet service is also completely off. Even the phone network is not compatible.

High Court judgment on quota quashed: Appellate Division

The Supreme Court overturned the verdict of the High Court on quota.

The government’s leave to appeal against the order of the High Court was heard on Sunday. After hearing the full bench of the Supreme Court, the verdict was delivered at 1.30 pm.

For the past few days, massive clashes have been going on across the country over the reform of the quota system in government jobs. Curfew has been imposed and the army deployed since Friday night to handle the situation. Hundreds of people died across the country in the violence.

Within the curfew, the full bench of the Supreme Court started the hearing on quota on Sunday morning.

The Attorney General for the state filed an application seeking to quash the order of the High Court.

The court allowed five lawyers to speak on behalf of the students.

Out of the nine lawyers who participated in the Supreme Court hearing, eight were in favour of quashing the High Court’s order. A lawyer advocates quota reforms.

Earlier in 2018, the government issued a circular cancelling the quota system in the first and second-class jobs in the face of the movement on quota.

When a writ was filed against that judgment, a bench of the High Court declared the circular illegal and reinstated the quota on June 5 of this year.

The next day, the students started a movement demanding the cancellation of the quota system. Later, however, they started a movement demanding reforms. They started vigorous agitation in July.
